How to Build a BirdHouse

Here are some great books and plans

Build Your Own Birdhouses and Feeders: From Simple, Natural Designs to Spectacular, Customized Houses and Feeders

Local songbird populations are rapidly declining, and food, shelter and safe nesting areas are urgently needed. This remarkable book is packed with great ideas plus all the woodworking drawings and howto information needed for hobbyists and birders who want to build attractive birdhouses, feeders and nesting boxes that will attract birds.

Build Your Own Birdhouses and Feeders features a wide range of designs suitable for all skill levels and space limitations, from a very easy box feeder for a small balcony to the challenge of a magnificent bird mansion for a large garden. The 25 projects appeal to a variety of tastes, ranging from a traditional Victorian townhouse, to a tonguein-cheek Wild West saloon, to a medieval tournament tent.

Each project includes:

  • Detailed designs with acolor photo of the finished item
  • Easy-to-follow instructions and step-by-step illustrations
  • Enlarged and technical diagrams in color
  • List of recommended materials
  • Advice on choosing a location for best results.

Customer Review: Build Your Birdhouses and Feeders.
No place in this book gives hole sizes for the birds you want to attract. Birds are very fussy about the size of the hole and also the size of the nesting cavity. I would consider this the worst book I have ever read on building bird house and feeders. I am glad I looked at it before I gave it to a friend. Not one practical bird feeder for wet and inclement weather. Beautiful bird houses, but no birds!
Customer Review: Beautiful Book, Great Plans
Perkins begins the book with some backround bird and woodworking information that will be useful for the beginner. He then gets into plans for 19 houses and 7 feeders. Each project includes color photos of the completed house or feeder - these are not just the figments of a writer's imagination. There are detailed, measured, exploded color drawings of each house. His designs include several different methods of access for cleaning out the houses after each nesting period. I particularly like the "slide" designs - no tools or dropped screws to worry about. Some of these houses are so pretty, I don't know if I would want to put them out in the yard. I suppose with a little imagination, you could scale his designs to meet the needs of a variety of species. He has a breif, one page chart showing entrance sizes for some birds. He also show "slot" as well as round entrance options on some of his designs. I still keep referring back to Scott D. Campbell's "The Complete Book of Birdhouse Construction for Woodworkers" as a more complete technical reference. (See that review on Amazon.) Overall, this is a very good book on birdhouses, very inspirational for the imaginative bird "landlord." This book is profusely illustrated with color photos and drawings; it could be a "coffee table" book if you don't get it filled with sawdust!

Build a Better Birdhouse (Or Feeder): New Designs in Avian Architecture
Most birdhouses, according to "underground architect" Malcolm Wells, are "silly-looking boxes embarrassing us out of doors. We owe it to the Creator of the birds, if not the birds themselves, to give it our very best shot; to say, somehow, in human terms, what they say so movingly in grass and twigs and straw." The author has been giving it his best shot for over 40 years, creating little habitats of weathered wood that belong to and blend elegantly with the landscape. The 25 easy-to-follow designs presented here (with the author's humorous and philosophical asides) will make both birds and people happy.
Customer Review: Build a Better Birdhouse
I loved this book. Great designs. However, the following day I received in the mail the same book published with the title "Classic Architectural Birdhouses and Feeders." It's very annoying when authors publish the same material with different titles and cover designs.
Customer Review: Good for inspiration, but not for beginners' guidance.
This book has some novel and interesting ideas for breaking out of the classical design mold which might be boring to some people. However, contrary to the claim on the backcover that it contains "...easy-to-follow construction drawings even the most hesiteant amateur will be moved to build...", the designs really require the skills of a moderately experienced carpenter or cabinetmaker to follow. If you're already experienced in woodworking and reading design plans, then the diagrams may appear to be "elegantly simple". However, to a construction novice like myself, the designs will be daunting. The book is worth the price just to get some nice new design ideas, but don't expect it to be a beginner's guide to construction.

The Bird House Book: How To Build Fanciful Birdhouses and Feeders, from the Purely Practical to the Absolutely Outrageous
Over 30 fabulous birdhouses and feeders: a log cabin, a country cottage, a '50s diner, a San Francisco row house, and many others. Full-color photos, detailed patterns, grids, and instructions, plus charts on hole size, perch height, and feeding--and tips on attracting and protecting preferred species. "Some of these projects look so good, you hardly want to put them outside. None of them are difficult to build."--Booklist.

Customer Review: Not for people who want functional bird habitats.
This book caters to people who want to make art rather than basic functional houses to attract wild birds. I just wanted a book where I could get plans for a variety of bird houses that I could make with simple hand tools. I was also looking for more info on the particulars of what species are attracted to a particular type of structure. Sure, the houses in the book are great but I didn't want to make a log cabin or a post-modern art-deco bungalow. I just wanted to learn how to make a few basic houses and learn how to attract and feed wild birds. I had to send the book back.
Customer Review: Ther'll never be another.
After building every house in this book I wanted more. I went in search for something that would give me as much pleasur as this book. I've paid as much as 100 dollars and now have 8 books. What a waste!!! The plans in this book are easy to read and follow and are one of a kind bird houses. please Bruce and David don't leave us hanging.
